The group brings together research activities spanning quantum information and computing, quantum foundations, device engineering and quantum operations, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum matter and simulation across a range of physical platforms. While covering diverse physical systems and theoretical approaches, these activities are unified by the common goal of understanding, controlling, and exploiting quantum phenomena in microscopic and mesoscopic regimes, where quantum coherence, correlations, and other quantum effects play a central role.
Our research develops concepts, methods, and protocols that deepen our understanding of quantum phenomena and enable new approaches to information processing, communication, sensing, and simulation. Alongside these theoretical activities, the group hosts an applied quantum sensing laboratory dedicated to the development and implementation of quantum technologies. We collaborate extensively with leading experimental and theoretical groups worldwide in areas ranging from atomic, optical, and solid-state platforms to quantum information processing and precision measurement. These collaborations foster close interaction between physical implementations and conceptual developments in quantum science and technology.
QUINST was founded in 2008 by J. Gonzalo Muga and has been recognized as a “Grupo Consolidado” by the Basque Government since 2010, with grants IT472-10, IT986-16, and IT1470-22.
